Responsible Play

Play for fun, play in control.

Poker at Card Wing Newtown is social entertainment, not a way to make a living. We want every guest to enjoy the game and leave feeling good about their night.

This page explains the standards we hold at our venue at 194 King Street, Newtown, and the simple habits that keep play enjoyable for everyone.

Effective date: 9 October 2026

Our Commitment

We are committed to providing a safe, welcoming environment for all players. Our team is trained to recognise when play may no longer be fun and to offer help without judgement.

  • We treat poker as a social game and encourage a relaxed, respectful atmosphere.
  • Our staff can answer questions about limits, breaks, and support at any time.
  • We reserve the right to refuse service or ask a guest to take a break where appropriate.

Age Verification

Card Wing Newtown is a 21+ venue. Every guest must be at least 21 years old to enter and play poker.

  • Photo identification may be requested on entry and at any time during your visit.
  • Anyone who cannot demonstrate they meet the age requirement will not be admitted.
  • Underage guests are never permitted to play, and this policy is strictly enforced.

Set Your Limits

Deciding how much you are comfortable spending before you sit down is the easiest way to keep play in perspective.

  • Bring only what you can afford to lose, and leave cards and cash at home.
  • Decide on a budget and a time limit before you start, then stick to them.
  • Never chase losses or play with money set aside for rent, bills, or family.

Take Breaks

A clear head makes for better decisions and a better night out. We encourage players to step away regularly.

  • Pause for water, food, or fresh air between sessions.
  • Avoid long, unbroken stretches at the table, especially when tired.
  • If you are upset or frustrated, take a break before your next hand.

Alcohol and Play

Drinking and poker do not mix well. Alcohol can cloud judgement and lead to decisions you would not normally make.

  • Keep alcohol to a moderate level while you are playing.
  • Our staff may decline service to guests who appear intoxicated.
  • Look after friends and fellow players, and speak up if something seems off.

Warning Signs

It may be time for a break if you notice any of the following in yourself or a friend.

  • Playing longer than planned or spending more than intended.
  • Hiding your play from family or friends.
  • Playing to escape stress, or feeling anxious and irritable away from the table.
  • Borrowing money, or relying on wins to cover everyday expenses.

Getting Help

If play has stopped being fun, you are not alone and support is available. You can ask to speak privately with a member of our team, who can help you pause play and point you towards appropriate support services.

  • You can choose to self-exclude from the venue by speaking with our staff.
  • We can provide information on professional counselling and gambling support services.
  • Talk to someone you trust, and seek help early if you have concerns.
